Library Code of Conduct
Individuals utilizing the services or facilities offered by Westlock Libraries are required to show consideration for the rights of others and should behave in a manner so as to not inconvenience, offend or limit the rights of other patrons to have access to library material, services and facilities. Users should behave in a manner that does not interfere with or otherwise prevent the library staff from providing services to individuals or interrupt them in the performance of their duties.

Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the library.

Food is not permitted in the library.

Cell phones are not permitted in library proper; they may be used in the hall outside the main library door.

All activities in the library will be conducted in a quiet manner to avoid disturbing other library patrons.

Personal headphones must be used on any device that emits sound. Library staff reserves the right to request that personal headphone volume be turned down to an acceptable level.

Online gaming is not permitted on any computer in the library.

Public computer use is restricted to one person.

Use of instant messaging/conversation on pubic computers is not permitted on any computer in the library.

Web sites visited must be appropriate for public viewing. i.e. suitable viewing for minors, not deemed a criminal offence.

Individuals are required to use library equipment and facilities for designated purposes only.

Backpacks and large personal bags must be left beside the Service Desk.
The Director, Assistant Director or senior clerk at any of the libraries may invoke any of the following sanctions to individuals or groups who participate in anything deemed to contravene the code of conduct.
The sanctions determined and imposed may include any or all of the following;

Eviction from the premises

Rescinding of their Library Card and/or use of facilities/services for a time determined by the Director

Banning from the Westlock Municipal Library for a predetermined time

Reporting to local policing authority and/or pressing of charges if deemed appropriate
Any individual who has been sanctioned may appeal to the Director in writing. Follow-up appointment with the Director will be made and a mutual outcome reached. If a mutual outcome is not reached, the matter may be referred to the Westlock Municipal Library Board. All decisions of the board are final. See Policy 3.4.7 “Appeals to the Board”
